Harry Kane scored twice in the first half as England defeated Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling World Cup Group stage match in Texas on Wednesday, giving manager Thomas Tuchel a winning start to his World Cup campaign.
England were pushed hard by 2018 finalists Croatia national football team, who fought back twice during an intense first half before ultimately falling short in a high-tempo encounter.
Kane Leads Early Charge
England took the lead after Croatia captain Luka Modrić conceded a penalty for a foul on Noni Madueke. Kane’s first effort was saved by Dominik Livaković, but a VAR review ordered a retake, which the England captain converted confidently.
Croatia responded quickly, with Martin Baturina finishing a well-worked move to level the score.
End-to-End First Half Drama
England regained control when Kane headed home from a Declan Rice corner, taking his World Cup tally to 10 goals and equalling Gary Lineker’s record for England.
However, Croatia struck again in first-half stoppage time through Petar Musa, punishing defensive errors to make it 2-2 at the break.

England started the second half in explosive fashion. Jude Bellingham drove forward immediately after the restart and calmly finished to restore England’s lead.
Despite Croatia’s continued pressure, England found their fourth goal late on when substitute Marcus Rashford scored to secure the victory.

England created several more chances through Kane and Bellingham but were wasteful in front of goal, allowing Croatia brief opportunities to get back into the match.
Nevertheless, England held firm in the final stages to secure a valuable opening win in their World Cup title push.
The result gives Tuchel’s side early momentum as they aim to win their first major international trophy since 1966.
