Iran opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a tense and emotionally charged match.
New Zealand struck first through Elijah Just after a sharp attacking move involving Chris Wood, while Iran responded with pressure and created several chances before Ramin Rezaeian levelled with a rebound finish.
The Kiwis regained the lead early in the second half as Just completed his brace, but Iran once again fought back when Mohammad Mohebi powered in a header from a precise cross.
Both sides had opportunities to win it in the final stages, with Iran pushing forward strongly but unable to convert their chances.
