Lionel Messi World Cup Hat-Trick Equals All-Time Scoring Record as Argentina Beat Algeria

Lionel Messi delivered a stunning hat-trick as Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in their Group J clash on Tuesday, equaling the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring record and once again proving his influence at the age of 38.

With his three goals, Messi matched Germany’s Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals, while also becoming the oldest player in history to score a World Cup hat-trick. The achievement came exactly 20 years after his first World Cup goal.

The match, held at Kansas City Stadium, also marked Messi’s 200th international appearance for Argentina and added another historic chapter to his legendary career.

Messi thought he had opened the scoring early in the fifth minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. However, he soon found his rhythm and delivered a masterclass performance.

His first goal came in the 17th minute after a brilliant through ball from Rodrigo De Paul, allowing Messi to cut forward and fire a powerful 25-yard strike into the top corner, with goalkeeper Luca Zidane unable to stop it.

His second came in the 60th minute when a long-range effort from Alexis Mac Allister was spilled by Zidane, and Messi calmly finished the rebound to double Argentina’s lead.

Messi completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with another clinical finish, set up by substitute Nico González, sealing a dominant performance for the reigning champions.

Algeria had brief moments of hope, including a disallowed goal from Fares Chaibi, but they were unable to break through Argentina’s defense. They also appealed for a red card when Messi accidentally stepped on Aïssa Mandi, but no action was taken.

Argentina, who are aiming to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup, delivered a commanding performance that eased earlier doubts about their form and consistency.

They will next face Austria in Arlington, Texas, while Algeria take on Jordan in their upcoming fixture.
